DAY 1 - ARRIVAL IN MILNA, CROATIA

With barely any sleep, we headed to Bristol airport bright and early on the Sunday morning. With a 6.00am Easyjet flight to Split, we managed to get there 5 hours too early, which actually managed to be earlier than the airport opens security. After a hot chocolate, we proceeded into security where we found ourselves sat waiting for our gate number to appear on screens for over two hours.

A 2 1/2 hour flight to Split, with barely a nap to catch up on sleep, we were at our destination. Weather was excruciatingly hot, way too hot for us Brits. Onto the bus to then be sent through the Split airport doors to passport control. Finally, we are in the rustle & bustle of the arrivals area. Mention the word taxi and you were tackled by 5 taxi drivers asking for destination.

Managed to vier past the taxis and find ourselves a coach that would take us to the Split Port. With a very helpful Croatian with maps, prices, etc. 30 Kuna and we were set, just happy to find somewhere with air conditioning. With only a 30 minute bus drive we were at yet another rustling & bustling destination, in which we had not one clue of where to go or what to do. With no plan of how we were going to get to Milna, or how -- we were stumped.

We finally found an area in which you could buy ferry tickets to the islands of Dalmatia. 2 one way tickets to Hvar and we were half way there, all there was to do next was to wait for the ferry & find the ferry port. Finding the ferry port just on time, we travelled across sea to the island in which we were going to stay. Me not being the best with transport, let alone boats I was passed our asleep to control the sea sickness.

We arrived at Hvar finally, and once again taxi cabs like hawks just waiting for arrivals. With a 15 minute drive, and the air-con directed straight at my green face we were so close to being at Milna. Finally, we arrived at Milna! First things first, we had to find our Airbnb and meet the host - Darka. Lovely lady, who made us feel very comfortable and accommodated in every way.

Even though you may think, no sleep and an awful lot of travelling we would have a nap, we couldn't help ourselves but to go swimming. Our apartment was right on the water, a simple walk down a few steps and you were on the rocks of the sea. Being wimps when it comes to water, it did take a bit of persuading and convincing to jump in but we got there eventually. We swam for about an hour, just as the sun was setting.

We thought it would be time to grab some food, after not eating for the whole day. We found the first restaurant closer to our apartment called 'Moli Onte' -- it was exactly what we needed. I think we ordered mainly carbs and every single side imaginable. View was sensational, and without even trying, the restaurant was already one of the best I'd ever been too. This continued throughout the week in Milna! So, after a days worth of travelling we were zonked, time to get some shut eye!

DAY 2 & 3 - SNORKELLING WITH THE FISHES

Day 2 & 3 were the definition of chilled! With a nice long sleep in, we were in no rush to go galavanting off around the island. This day was a day of swimming, chilling & mainly eating. We grabbed a chocolate croissant from the local shop with the little amount of kuna we managed to salvage left over.

After a few rock scrambles and towel slips, we'd found ourselves the perfect spot. Our apartment had a balcony overlooking the spot in which we were going to vegetate over the next 3 days. Perfect location to sunbathe without being noticed, deep enough to rock jump into the ocean & just close enough to our house for us to go back & forth.

After a few paddles and jumps into the water, we decided it'd be best to buy ourselves a couple snorkels. Best decision we made! Like a couple of kids, we spent the day snorkelling around the rocks looking out for fishes (hopefully no big ones). Saw plenty of small fish, biggest fish being less than a foot large. Only thing I would say is be careful of the sea urchins clinging to the edges of the rocks. Although they are black & spiky, and quite obvious to the human eye - Tyler managed to come in contact with one while clambering into the sea from a ladder on the rocks. So, watch out and possibly buy water shoes!

As the week went on we got more brave and ventured around coves and rocks to different sections of the coast, nearly drowning and coughing salt water pretty much every time we tried to move the snorkel. We couldn't believe how deep the water was, even a meter or two away from the side.

We tried most of the restaurants along the Milna coast, Moli Onte & Fortuna being our most preferred for a "light" meal on the seafront. Beautiful views, cheap food & quick service - What more do you need!

DAY 4 - MILNA TO HVAR

We decided to venture out of Milna for the morning and walk to Hvar. Walking through the Milna campsite, onto the beach & up a dusty path. It took us roughly an hour, having google maps helped awfully even if there were signs on the path to different towns. (Recommend bringing large amounts of water as there wasn't really an shaded areas.)

I wouldn't say there was too much to do in Hvar, but we were hot & sweaty from the walk and seeing the sea all you want to do is jump in. There is a lovely walk along the sea front, where the ferries dock, people swim & there's a heck of a lot of ice-cream! We didn't stay too long, but we sure as hell weren't going to walk back. Taxi back to Milna, and we were in the sea in no time! The waves got more rough towards the end of our stay in Milna, making it harder for us to get in/out of the sea.

All-in-all that pretty much sums up our trip so Milna, Croatia! Sea, sunsets & a large amounts of carbs. I would recommend the place to anyone, and if I could I'd be back there in a flash!

TRAVEL TIPS

  • Bring Kuna to Milna as there is no cash points

  • Be careful of the sea urchins -- wear sea shoes
